How Starting a Business Can Change Your Life
Starting a business has so many advantages. Things like putting you in the driver’s seat and giving you the autonomy to do things you need to do in your day are some of the major things I love about having my own business.
But you may not realize that there are many other reasons for starting your own business. Here is a list of 6 reasons why it’s a good idea to start a business now.
Six Reasons to Start a Business
1. Freedom:
Do what you want when you want to do it! You’ll still be working hard when you have your own business, but you will be able to make decisions about things and do them when you want. You don’t have to answer to a BOSS! Blahhhh!
2. More Fun:
You get to pick something you love to do! Yay! Cheers for being excited to wake up in the morning and actually WANT to get out of bed! Doing something you love will give you the momentum to want to work everyday. Seriously, I get energy to do things and before I know it, my whole day has gone by! And I’m excited for the next day, and next day!
3. Help Others:
There are people out there who need to know what you have been through or what you have to offer. As a business owner, you will have the chance to directly impact people’s lives with your product or service. You know you have a purpose here, so what are you waiting for?
4. Growth
When you start a business, you will be immersing yourself in a whole new world. You will learn so much and develop as a person as you work your business. You may develop new skills such as leadership, networking, budgeting, etc.
5. Community:
You get to network with like minded people and make new friends. It’s important to feel needed in this world and I believe if you want to stay mentally healthy, it’s important to feel like you get to share in a community.
6. Build Something You Can Call Your Own
You don’t have to make some BOSS rich anymore! Now you get to create something that is yours and you get to build it as big as you like.
Way more reasons to start a business now
Of course there are many other reasons to start a business. Here is a bigger list of some of my favorites. Not that I’m trying to persuade you or anything! 😉
1. Tax benefits:
You get to write off business expenses. So if you use a computer, cell phone, or vehicle, then you may get to write those expenses off!
2. Building assets:
Owning a business means you will be purchasing things like real estate, products, equipment and materials. Many of these things are great investments. I made a lot of great decisions about buying equipment with my first business and over time, it increased the total worth of my business.
3. Reduce your commute:
This was a biggie for me. I hated driving an hour to get to my job! When you own your own business, you can either work from home or find an office space close to where you live.
4. Learn to embrace failure:
There are ways to navigate out of failure and become a success. It is NECESSARY to fail in business. There were many times I was doing the wrong things in my business and had to make course corrections. As a business owner, you will be told no, you will fail, and you will fall down. You will also have the chance to make changes, adapt and push through in ways you never thought were possible.
5. Be challenged:
One of the biggest reasons I become a business owner was I felt BORED working for someone else. I kept asking for a promotion and to be shown how to improve so I could grow and I kept getting turned down. At some point I said “see ya,” and I paved my own path. Challenge is necessary to help you feel stimulated and to make you grow as a person.
6. Create Jobs:
I never thought that I would have employees with my little startup business. But after years of working for myself and lots of long hours, I decided it was time to get help. Soon after I surrendered to having to do it all myself, the right people came to me for work. When you start your own business, you will be contributing to the growth of society when you hire others.
7. Set Your own Deadlines:
No more answering to other’s timelines to create projects and products. If you want to create something special and take your time building it, now you can when you start your own business. I know a man who carves wood into amazing western artwork. I asked him how long it takes him to carve one piece. He shared that he used to let his clients tell him when they needed it done by. He felt a great deal of pressure to meet their deadlines. Then he decided to tell them that he would get it done when it was done. AND he increased his prices. The pressure is gone. His artwork bloomed even more because the pressure is gone. With your own business, you can be honest about what deadline works for you.
8. Financial Independence:
To start a business of your own means you will be setting up yourself for financial independence, You will be in charge of how much you make. You are creating your own wealth and abundance. My life completely changed for the better when I started my first business. I was in debt from college and my credit cards were maxed out. Starting a business taught me how to respect money and to budget. It gave me a sense of finances that I never learned in school. It has been the best money lesson I have ever had!
9. Leave a legacy:
This business you are creating may be small now. But as you build it and dream up new concepts and new ways of doing things, you will forever be leaving an impact in the world. What is the legacy you will leave when you pivot, sell your business or move on? Maybe it will be something you leave behind for your kids. Maybe it will create a major change for the Earth or even just one person’s life. The business you create will make a difference.
10. Discover something new:
Generally when you start a business, you begin by offering a product or service that might already be used by the public. But as time goes by and you become more of an expert at your particular niche, it’s likely that you will discover a better way of offering your product or service. You might improve upon a design or come up with a whole new way of doing things!

Tips to Start a Business
If you want to become an entrepreneur, there’s really nothing holding you back. I always suggest to start with your greatest passion and think strategically about how you can monetize your efforts from the beginning. If you have a passion and skill for something, then make a short list of three to five ways you can make money from that passion or skill. Those can be the products or services you offer. Keep you offering to this small list for now and test out your offer by creating a simple price sheet for each of these offerings. Then simply let people know you are open for business. Tell people you meet what you do. You can always get more education or expand upon your skills in the future. But there’s likely something you already know or do well that can translate into a small business right now!
